Old Sauk Accessible Trail #728

This very special trail just south of Darrington, is approximately a 1.3 mile loop with a short spur to the river.  Now hikers of all abilities from wheelchairs to strollers can enjoy lush green forest, wildflowers and the musical sounds of the Sauk River.

This trail is a newer addition to the Old Sauk Trail.  The trail winds through mossy remnants of old growth, second growth and riparian forest with a couple of gentle grades with no significant elevation gain . There are a couple of turnouts along the trail where forest, wetlands and wildlife can be viewed.  This trail is a great year round destination and snow free for most of the year.

Seeing the Sauk River season by season is like discovering a new river every time!  Spring is a time of fresh brilliant green leaves and emerald green waters.  Summer is a time of snow melt and whitewater rapids.  Fall is a pageant of colors as the leaves change, then giving way to winter when the shores are framed with lacy frosted trees.  During late fall and winter keep you eye out for Bald eagles that come to feed on runs of spawning salmon.

There is a bridge crossing a stream at the middle of the loop trail. This is a nice place to see springtime woodland wildflowers such as Trillium and Wood Violets.
