North Mountain Lookout Grand Opening

August 10, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 8:00 pm

Please Register To Participate At Brown Paper Tickets.  There is no charge for this event, but registration is needed to enter the lookout site.

The Friends of North Mountain, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, will host a day of free public access to view and enjoy the fully restored fire lookout on North Mountain near Darrington, WA in an “open house” format. This event centers on celebrating and showcasing the amazing new highlight the historic lookout provides for outdoor adventure enthusiasts of all ages visiting Snohomish and Skagit Counties. The event will also recognize the hours of dedicated service by dozens and dozens of volunteers and institutions who made possible the restoration of this special piece of Pacific Northwest history.  With clear weather, 360-degree views include the Olympic Mountains, the Stillaguamish and Sauk river valleys, Mt. Baker, the North Cascades National Park, the Glacier Peak Wilderness and the Boulder Creek Wilderness.
Free unrestricted event parking is available Aug 10 at the Whitehorse Community Park north of Darrington off Highway 530. Registrants are asked to support community carpooling from the Whitehorse Community Park to the North Mountain Upper Mountain Biking (MTB) parking lot due to limited parking availability at the upper lot. COVID-related and other health concerns will be supported as needed. A free shuttle (not for mountain bikes, only pedestrians) to the summit of North Mountain from the upper mountain biking parking lot will be available.
Visitors are requested to spend up to three hours at the site to allow for additional visitors to have space for parking and attendance later in the day.
Free food and beverages will be served at the summit during lunch and dinner hours.  Visitors will have a chance to view and use the Osborne Fire Finder (first time for the device to be relocated back in the fire lookout where it was once used!), and purchase a commemorative coin celebrating the event ($10). A short formal presentation program will begin at 1pm at the summit, concluding with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Afterward there will be continuing visitation in the “open house” format.
Be on the lookout for Smokey the Bear as well!
Registration is needed for permission to access the Upper North Mountain Parking Lot.  There is no planned use of the Lower North Mountain MTB parking lot for this event.
